Because We Care
December, 2014
Bulletin 5

[email protected]

Thanks for the support as I wrap up my term as President of the International Medical Interpreters Association - IMIA

As many of you know, my second term as IMIA President ends December 31, 2014. It has been a pleasure serving as an IMIA Board member for the last 6 years. IMIA has advanced tremendously, we have over 70 of our most dedicated members leading Committees, Divisions, Task forces, National and International Chapters. I wish success to the newly elected Board of Directors. Ms. Juana Horton, will become President as of January 1st.

Each IMIA member is an important part of this association, I congratulate them for their dedication and commitment to the IMIA. Together, we are making a difference in the medical interpreting field. It was an honor to serve on the IMIA Board of Directors.

I would like to thank all those who supported me during my tenure, in particular, the Board of Directors, the leadership members and staff members, it would have not been possible without you.

Effective time mastery tips:

  • Have a purpose – know your “Why”
  • Make sure the usage of your time is aligned with your Life Mission
  • Use time productively and efficiently
  • There are only 24 hours – 1,440 minutes in a day
  • Time is not recyclable, the minute you use is gone forever, use them wisely
  • Concentration – do one task at a time, the brain does not multitask
  • Prioritize
  • Check off accomplished tasks
  • Email: the inbox is not a to do list. File emails in folders for easy tracking.
  • Avoid interruptions: most interruptions last 6-9 minutes, it takes 4-5 minutes to go back to the task at hand.
  • Focus on the important matters

  • Use an electronic or paper based scheduler
  • Set an action plan - track activities daily / weekly / monthly
  • Schedule time every week for administration
  • Allow some time for the unexpected
  • Stay on schedule
  • Set deadlines

  • Maximizing the use of time is the means to a happier life!
  • Celebrate your progress
  • Organize your life to achieve harmony
  • Set time for yourself and family
  • Take care of your health
  • Spend time with people that make a positive contribution to your life
  • Get rid of the clutter in your house or office
  • Get rid of negativity in your life
  • Be proactive
  • Think positively
  • Forgive so you don’t spend time thinking about grudges
  • Be grateful

  • A list of your goals - All that you what you want to accomplish - Business and personal - Short and long term
  • The results you want to achieve
  • The purpose for obtaining them
  • The plan that you have to do so
  • Deadlines - Schedule it!

Focus on doing a few very well done rather than a lot in a mediocre way

Content from non-profit associations

We are glad to support the work of non-profit associations working towards the improvement of the translation and interpreting field. If you have events or news to share, we will be happy to publish them at no cost.

We wish you health, happiness, peace, gratefulness and prosperity for 2015

We are dedicating the December 31st issue of our bulletin to Goal Setting. Only 3%-5% of the population has written goals. Research has demonstrated that, those with written goals are not only more successful but happier.

Stop Procrastinating

Tasks – focus on end result not on process

  • Unpleasant tasks
    • complete them first if possible early in the day
  • Complex jobs
    • break them down into smaller units

Indecision – share your goals and deadlines

Why do we procrastinate?

  • Fear of failure (or success!)
  • Lack of confidence – reason for delay
  • Perfectionism
  • Distractions
  • Lack of interest
  • Feeling of anxiety about a project
  • Disorganization
